Ou of the need for economic development, Kaohsiung was selected for developing petrochemical industries; therefore Kaohsiung suffers a lot of environmental cost, resulting in the current situation that air pollution flags must be hung up to alert the air quality.

Yuan-Tseh Lee, Academicians of Academia Sinica, summarizes that the environmental problem is a global one, requiring a joint effort of the whole world. One single country’s effort can only make little change, and the whole world should all make efforts. Rather than operate at the unit of major countries in United Nations, the cooperation should be done by all nations altogether, and the citizenship must be able to be transferred. At the level of society, economic development that originates only from the view of industrial development is not attainable, and we should seek breakthrough in such viewpoint. Technically we have not made fully use of solar power energy, and the research and development should continue, expanding the use of clean energy to the world. The predicament we are facing must be solved by social transformation.
