Event Details
In 2015, the United Nations (UN) Member States decided to adopt the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which set out a blueprint that countries can follow to achieve the goals by 2030. The SDGs outline 17 goals such as for poverty and inequality reduction, as well as actions to combat climate change and protect the environment, and to also transit into using renewable energy to build sustainable cities. While Taiwan is not a UN member, Taiwan has also adopted the SDGs as a responsible member of the international community, and on top of that, has also included the goal of establishing a nuclear-free homeland by 2025 as an additional goal.
To support the implementation of the SDGs, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), together with the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), and the Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC), launched The World in 2050 (TWI2050) initiative, to provide fact-based knowledge to support the policy process and implementation of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Altogether, more than 60 authors from about 20 institutions, and 100 independent experts from academia, the government, businesses, as well as from intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations from around the world, have collaborated on this initiative, TWI2050 has since launched two reports in 2018 and 2019, the first of which discuss six major transformations that are required to achieve the SDGs, such as by on enhancing human capacity and adopting decarbonization and energy transition initiatives; and the second which looks at how the digital revolution can help societies achieve the SDGs, as well as the challenges that may be faced.
TWI2050 is headed by Prof. Dr. Nebojsa Nakicenovic who is its Executive Director. At the talk, we have invited Prof. Dr. Nakicenovic to share the key findings from the two TWI2050 reports, as well as the role that digitalization can play in sustainable development. Participants can also engage in a discussion with Prof. Dr. Nakicenovic to look at how TWI2050 can be applicable to Taiwan’s context and SDG implementation.
