Prof. Dr. Ortwin Renn, Scientific Director of Institute of Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), Germany, came with a group of IASS experts visiting the Risk Society and Policy Research Center (RSPRC) at National Taiwan University (NTU). IASS and NTU worked together to held an International KLASICA (Knowledge, Learning and Societal Change Alliance) Symposium from Nov. 21st to 24th, 2016. This Symposium also involved participation with the Global Change Research Center at NTU, Graduate Institute of National Development at NTU and Northern Environment Education Regional Center at National Taiwan Normal University. Almost 40 scholars deeply exchanged their ideas, works and experience on the topic of "collective behavior change towards sustainable futures in Asian Island and isolated communities."
Prof. Dr. Kuei-Tien Chou, the RSPRC Director, with his colleagues, accompanied with Pro. Dr. Renn to visit the RSPRC office after the symposium. Prof. Dr. Renn also introduced his colleague Prof. Dr. Ilan Chabay, Senior Fellow of IASS, and other members from KLASICA to the RSPRC staff. All the participants had a fruitful conversation. We hope we will be having substantial cooperation in the near future.
Prof. Dr. Ortwin Renn is a well-known scholar in the field of Risk Governance. In his talk, Prof. Renn not only mentioned some key concepts of risk but also addressed three current challenges of systemic risks, complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity. Prof. Renn also shared his insights about the influence of technological risks over the public conceptions and the public attitudes towards risks. He encouraged the policy makers should help the society to deal with uncertainty rather than to make it certain.
In the discussion, some RSPRC research fellows asked some questions about the idea of risk governance and discussed the issues of risk communication dilemma between the public and government. Prof. Chou and the RSPRC team then showed a brief introduction to Prof. Renn about their researching projects in progress, such as Energy Transition, Air Pollution and so on. Later Prof. Chou presented Taiwan Oolong Tea as a gift and Prof. Renn gave the film DVDs about Potsdam. We all looking forward to having more opportunities to build up deeper connections.
