[Event Review] Taiwan Risk Society Forum- Air Pollution and Energy Transformation (II)

Professor Kuei-Tien Chou pointed out that, Yuan-Tseh Lee, Academicians of Academia Sinica, address the influence of climate change on the world from a very broad view. This forum discussed not only Kaohsiung Gas Explosion, but also varies of problems from a higher level, such as choice of energy and industry transformation. Although presidential election is approaching and the society is in uproar, the problems of climate change and risk reach beyond border. Prof. Kuei-Tien Chou suggested that on the topic of governance transition and pursuit of labor rights, Taiwan lapses into inertia. There was no lack of transformation and reform in Taiwan, but now it has become indelible pain.

What kind of corporate social responsibility does our society need? Prof. Wen-Ling Hong put forward that more research should be done on building safety tools, and public education should be corporates responsibility. We should have citizen science training that is localized. The research into air quality is highly concentrated on technology R&D, and is missing in humanities and social science. Regarding education, after Kaohsiung Gas Explosion, related education association is quiet, or engineering ethics is seen as an issue that cannot be said of. All these are problems. Prof. Wen-Ling Hong suggests that it is citizen science supported by professionalism that is able to eliminate the barrier to technology issues, and there is hope as long as everyone face the problem together.

Prof. Kuei-Tien Chou summarized that from brown economy, green economy to information transparency, these are all important part of sustainability governance. It is not a sign of progress for the current government to treat request for information transformation as unreasonable. We should all work together.
